Branch Chain Amino Acids 3:1:1

Branch chain amino acids are a combination of three amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. Studies show that BCAAs help decrease fatigue while exercising;(1)During exercise the ratio of free tryptophan to BCAAs in the plasma increase. Tryptophan is than taken up by the brain. The results of this lead to an uptake of of 5-HT in the brain.Changes in the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the brain has been noted to cause fatigue. By taking BCAAs before exercise it can increase the ratio of BCAA/Tryptophan in plasma, allowing for less Tryptophan to been taken up in the brain and less 5-HT being synthesised. This can help delay fatigue while exercising.(2)


Leucine works to activate mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR).(3) When (mTOR) is activated there is an increase in protein synthesis.(4)  mTOR also activates a ribosomal protein known as S6, which allows for a greater amount of synthesis to occur.(5)


Isoleucine is considered an essential acid. Isoleucine’s main benefit is its ability to increase endurance. It is able to boost energy by being broken down in the muscle tissue.(6)


Valine is considered an essential acid. Valine can increase physical performance by enhancing energy by supplying the muscles with an increase in glucose.(7)
